What's new

Help me branch out..

Your going to the Wrong places if you need to add soy sauce >.>
Soy sauce is a great compliment to many fishes while still retaining the taste of the fish itself. You shouldn't douse the fish in the soy sauce, it's meant to add a little zest/saltiness to it. It's an additive of taste, not a replacement of taste.

Also, you're* <3

Well there is only one place i eat sushi in america lol and he does not alow soy sauce. Also last time i traveld to japan i ate at Jiros also does not allow soy sauce they do put it on certine fish themself but other than that its a no no

Books: WE by Yevgeny Zevny (It's THE dystopian future novel)
Anything by Hunter S. Thompson (I am currently reading Songs of the Doomed)

Movies: Unicorn City (d&d larp movie)
The Good, The Bad, and the Weird
The Warrior's Way
Valhalla Rising*** My personal favorite.

Food: Crayfish are delicious, easy and fun. Haggis/Blood Sausage is a tasty combo.

Is it the consistency or just the 'raw fish' aspect? As Bruce mentioned, a lot of times you can find something great by asking for the chef's recommendation. Even letting them know that you're fairly new to it (so they don't give you something crazy)

I just don't think I've been to a quality sushi place. The stuff I've had has either been at a buffet style place or from a grocery store.

Oh. Gross. Never do that again.

Edit: Correction. Unless your place has an actual sushi chef behind the deli (A growing trend across the states right now). Those guys can be trusted to have quality ingredients, but again it's best to ask what is freshest and work from their recommendations.

Yeah.. that's tough. Just find any local place and start off with a Chicken Terriyaki roll (not at all traditional, but a great entry piece), Dynamite Roll and Spider Roll. 3 easy classics that aren't too over the top. Also, if you like spicy, definitely try a Bakudan

California roll is ALWAYS a safe bet. And is barely even fish.

Yes, but for a beginner, it's very easy to eat and is a great intro piece without being that fishy :)

That's one of my favorite movies. I still have no idea why, I just enjoy it so much.

My recommendations:

Book: The Princess Bride. Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Movies:Red Cliff. Chocolate (Thai Martial Arts Movie)

Food: I would recommend of ton of different asian dishes here, but my favorites have already been mentioned. I will second the Pad Thai then. One of my favorite foods ever.

Book: Wool collected short stories. You can get the first 4 or so short stories collected as a single book for super cheap on amazon.
Movie: The usual suspects.
Food to cook: 40 clove garlic chicken. Easy other than prep and amazing to eat. Instead of a whole chicken I just use drums and thighs.

Skip to 16:20 to get the 40 cove recipe, although the rest of the show is awesome and all about garlic and garlic dishes.

and here is how to peel all that garlic in under 10 seconds. It really works.

I saw the documentary. In the film they quoted a guy that a meal was about $300 US to start, more if they got expensive fish that day. Supposedly its the best sushi in the world though.

If I had the cash I would do it.
