Where to start...

Internalizing Master Of Casual
I've been wanting to get into comics for so long but i have no idea where i want to start. The pricing is a little throwoff as well but will pay if it is a series i am interested in. X-men is a series i have been wanting to get in to but like i said, i don't know where i can start.

I look around and some of the early comics are not there or are extremely expensive because of limited availability.

Is there a site you go to read these? With comics i know there is more restrictions on reading them online outside of the Official pages. Granted, i do not mind going to the official page to read these.

So my challenge to you. Help me find a starting point and some good comics to read :)

Comix is the only place i know of that has stuff online and you have to pay for a subscription. Good thing about them though is that they also have a smart phone app for reading.

Oh! And for X-men the starting off point would be after Scarlet Witch remakes reality so that Apocalypse never existed, because everything before that has been ret-conned anyway.

Imo, the Marvel wiki is a good place to start. DC might have something similar (I remember you mentioning you play DCUO?). They'll give you an up-to-date summary of characters and drop some saga names that could be good reads... though, on second thought it's a double edged sword. While it does catch you up for new content, it's a ton of spoliers for the old content. Up to you.

DC and Dark Horse have some really good writers.

If you have some characters or stories that you know you'd like to read, I'd be happy to poke around for the issue spans so you don't accidentally stumble across spoilers.

Re: pricing, try to shop for graphic novels. You'll find collections of comics spanning a single story arc. Also, to get your feet wet, there's a ton of manga on the web if you are interested...

...and torrents...

...but of course, please support content creators and publishers once you've found something you enjoy. :]

For DC, starting at the beginning of the New 52 is a good place. I read Batman, The Flash, Superman, the Justice League, basically all the main solo books for the main JLA characters. Hellblazer is also fantastic, along with Justice League Dark.

Marvel, I've always been a fan of Spiderman, and the Avengers. Although I prefer the Ultimate Marvel 'verse to the 616 'verse.

For independant stuff, Y the Last Man is a favourite of mine.

Go to a major book store and go to the graphic novels sections. Pick up a few that look interesting. From there you can decide what you want to follow. The great thing about graphic novels is the fact that they are all self contained story lines that span multiple issues in the book's run. It's also a great place to get all the earlier stories that cost so much as single issues.

At some point go into a comic book store and talk to the help. They are all big comic nerds, especially the ones who are a bit older. They will gladly talk to you about what kind of stories and art you would like then point you in the right direction.

there is a great video that just came out 6 days ago that tells who every x-man ever was in order. It's spoilery just from the fact that you see who comes and goes etc. but worth a watch for getting a good feel for the world.

Also buy/read anything written by Chris Claremont. The absolute best writer of comics ever imo.
