Apparently, when Google bought Motorola, it kept their research program going. They have dubbed it Project Ara.

The website has only basic info, but the developers forum is kind of interesting to buzz through. It looks like there's talk of different placement of cameras, modifying/optimizing power usage, and lots of other cool concepts.
This may be all the push I need to switch from Apple to Android.
