Player created/run cities and towns

So this is a concept I've been kicking around the ole noodle for a while now and I see some games are even trying to implement this idea in one way or another - Tera allowed for player based government systems, EVE certainly has some player governments, The Repopulation is allowing completely player created cities, and I think (?) ArcheAge is doing something along these lines as well.

Would you play a game with Player owned and controlled cities? ...What if you weren't the one who owned/controlled it, would you still play then?

I honestly have always loved this as a concept (in my mind, it's always been some sort of players going into the wilderness to build their own means of survival scenario - maybe like Firefly meets Day-Z haha)

BUT, I'm not really sure how it would work in practice...has anyone had any real experience with something as ambitious as entirely player created cities in an MMO? Is it just too soon for that type of idea, and maybe it needs a few years?

Ultima Online had this and I Loved it. LOVE IT. Housing = my cryptonite.

I'm curious as to how that played out...did people run like evil empires that raided surrounding cities or did everyone exist in harmony? Maybe a little of column A a little of column B?

To me, I've always imagined this to be a great experiment in the Lord-of-the-flies type schema so it interests me (obviously the fact that it's the virtual world and not the real one has an influence on people's actions, but still)

In SWG payer cities replaced the main cities as centers of commerce on the planets. Some went bad... Burned down from lack of matinence but generally if you were on a planet, the most strategic playercity was the place to be.

DayZ has some planned player city mechanics brewin. We'll get to watch full loot ultima all over again.

Im really pissed I missed out on the SWG era. I was kinda looking forward to that SWG EMU project.

The emu is still alive and well. I play it from time to time. Requires you to have the original game + 13 patches which you can obtain through certain. Unsavory. Methods.

Theyve got player a lot of stuff working. A few things like the creature tamer and droid specialist trees arent working, but overall it is quite playable. If youre looking to obtain the force right off the bat though dont bother. The game requires quite a fair deal of work to achieve force sensitive status.

Anywhere from a month to a year. 3-6 months on average is what it was before.

In eithercase the community grew 10x when the official servers finally went down. Thousands on daily.
