Baldo wants to start a blog

So, with my wife being pregnant i am looking at many different ways to increase our income to help with the new arrival of our baby girl and so my wife can stay home to take care of our baby. I have looked at many things and i keep coming back to blogs. I know it is like anything on the internet and you need traffic to produce an income with it. First, i want to do this for fun/leisure to test the waters. I had an idea for 2 different types of blogs. A blog i can do on my own which would talk about everything, from DIY projects to gaming. The other would be a His/Hers blogs, take the same topic and see what a different outcome you get from a married couple.

I come here first asking for help in starting my blog, no i don't want your money. but instead i want your advice. Have you ever started a blog for profit or do you currently have a blog? What websites do you use? Wordpress.org and a hosting site like HostGator or GoDaddy.com. Is there anything i need to know in the legal aspect like for doing taxes?

First I want to say this is awesome! Making the decision to be a content creator is very brave.

I don't have much experience with blogging but I dated a guy who did all the search engine optimization (SEO) for his company. The biggest thing to being successful is finding your niche, optimizing the results in search engines, and marketing that material wherever it is appropriate.

I've heard good things about Wordpress and bluehost to host the website, but there are lots out there to try. There are also other sites out there so you just have to do your research.

If you plan on making money off the blog, I don't know if games would be the right blog. Ultimately you want to pick an audience with income to spend and narrow your key words based on that. There are certainly markets within gaming (Magic the Gathering or other things that cost money) you could tap into but gamers usually don't spend money on content creators.

Hope this helps. I still have that guy's number so if you need help with SEO I *might* be able to get him to help!

I know absolutely nothing about blogging, but I just wanted to chime in to show support! Good luck, Baldo.

I personally think the idea of a his/hers blog would be REALLY interesting, especially if you choose topics that are generally oriented towards one gender (i.e shoes or first person shooters).

What type of style are you hoping to take? Funny? Serious? Contemplative? Combination? That will impact your viewership as well, I think, since ALOT of people try to be ALOT of things and don't end up doing it well. My suggestion would be pick something that you ALREADY are/do. If you aren't funny, don't try to be funny just to get views. Because people will be able to see right through that. Be genuine!

Other than that, I really don't have anything to offer. I have definitely heard great things about wordpress, but I don't know from the other sites so take that with a grain of salt.

Like I said, good luck! I am rooting for you.

For blog starters I highly recommend blogspot it has the best built in seo and you can get a good feel with analytics built in to see if your topics are getting attention. Best of luck! For instance I made listentotristan.blogspot.com a long time ago and it made me a couple hundred dollars during Iphone releases. But it is a full time job to upkeep it because of all the competition. Have to find a niche that isn't saturated or a better way to present it or a unique way! Tell us what you decide! Also we can help promote good articles here with link backs etc. ALTTABME has amazing seo and web presence. Articles get to the top quickly.

Just a couple tidbits.

No matter what your viewership/readership, keep doing it. And not only keep doing it, but make a schedule of releases and stick to it. Don't stray from this schedule. If you plan to post 7 days a week, make sure you post 7 days a week (even if there are days you don't have a lot to post, still make a small post). Getting continual views / reads requires that consistency, be it a blog, a twitch stream, a youtube channel, etc. This type of commitment is needed, ESPECIALLY if you want it to be successful and profitable.

This and prepping multiple articles on delayed release help keep it manageable.

Thanks for all the responses everyone. I am looking forward to this experience.

I will probably start out small and do 1 piece a week and slowly build up from there.

gamers usually don't spend money on content creators.
This is true. I know i usually don't like ads and such when i look for gaming related material.

Thanks Tristan. I have heard good things about blogspot and think that would be a great place for me to start out. I still haven't fully decided on a dedicated topic as of yet but will def. let you all know and send you links to read them when we get them out there.

Showing support as well! I'd vote more towards the his/her perspective blog, as that can be interesting and conflict is always entertaining. I can't imagine how many of those are around either, so there might be less competition?

I think making separate blogs for each topic is best since all-in-ones probably won't get the traffic you're looking for. For example, I'd probably read your his/her and gaming content but skip over the DIY stuff. Those moments when I'm not engaged are moments when I'm more likely to click away.

Don't forget you can always reblog for extra content!

yeah that's what my plan is. Each blog would be a different topic ranging from the DIY to gaming content. I am agreeing that the his/hers might be the best way to go or i may just do both so that i can be less consistent with the his/hers and be more consistent with my personal one. Or vice versa depending on which content gets the better views and such.

So i pretty much convinced my wife to let us start the blog. Right now we are deciding on names for the blog because a name can make or break a company. Any ideas?

What we are going to write about is going to be a few different topics.

One will be a DIY project type using my father-in-law. With this we will take build a product while explaining step by step how to do this while taking pictures throughout. Afterwards the product will be available to buy for a limited time or an order can be custom made for the product (I don't know what i will need for tax purposes or if i need to get an LLC, still need to look into this, still just a thought) and after a certain amount of time if no one has bought the products we will take it to the flee market and liquidate it to recoup some money.

Another part of the blog will have to do with hair, weddings, marriage advice and so on which will be mostly my wifes part of the blog.

Then my part of the blog is still being worked out. I still want to write about gaming, gaming as a parent, gaming on a budget or on budgeted time. Maybe a few sports related blogs, health and fitness blog from a casual standpoint (not hardcore health field) and a few other ideas. If any one has ideas for me this would help tremendously.

This sounds more like 3 blogs there. If I had a blog that posted about all of this I would unsubscribe because of feed-spam. I understand that you want to keep everything in one place, but then you might want to combine everything, like talk about games that you played with your wife/ show that cool setup you build yourself to fix you console to your TV / um something something dress tipps for gamers something.

I agree with euchale on this one. It seems like it might be a bit overwhelming all in one blog. Like, I would subscribe to a gamer blog because I like that stuff. But if 2/3 of the posts are about hair and diy, I'd probably unsubscribe since I'm not interested in that stuff and I just want gaming stuff. I personally think its better to keep it more specific and less diverse so you don't scare off people with your wide variety of topics.

Maybe even work UP to something like you are describing. But get a solid base first in one type of thing, then as people read and subscribe and learn to like your style/like your stuff, you can slowly start introducing diff things. Cause then people come back for you, not just the topics.

ok, now. Is there a way i can get the hosting server while making a few different blogs without having to buy more server hosting?

I think what i am asking is if i purchase a server hosting site, can i run multiple blogs on it with a main host as the mother company. still new in this area so i am soaking up as much info i can.

Blogspot is free. You can make multiple blogs :)

I thought a server was a domain. guess i need to learn to be tech savvy.

I need a domain i.e. bluehosting or godaddy or blogspot
Software - like wordpress

Domain is the URL. Nominal annual fee (top link in my previous post). You can shop around by Googling "Domain name registrar".

Hosting refers to the vendor that actually stores the data for your website (server space). This is where the fees can rear their ugly heads. Plus, if you have your own website you sometimes have to license fonts, which can get costly.

Many hosts and all free sites offer templates, and they manage the content rights for fonts and images on their templates. This takes a huge load off your shoulders.

I say starting out with a "nameofblog".blogspot.com is a great start to see the interest. No one cares about the center if it is a well known blog spot. Then you can point it toward an actual domain if it starts to gain traction.

This might sound a little strange, but I think its the best advice out there.

Screw all that "follow your passion" bullhonkey, you might make money doing that but it will likely take years of hard work and lots of luck too.
Now, you might enjoy the process more and the chances of you sticking through to the end are higher, but you want money now, not when your kids are in middle school.

My advice is to follow what readers want to read about. This is the same thing I told my dad:
"Don't write the book you want to write, write the book people want to read."

You have the perfect opportunity in a child. Use this experience to get people interested in you. Use this experience to get interested in yourself.
Blog and review gaming, but do it from the perspective of a soon to be parent.
Think about what your gaming can teach your kids, think about what games you can complete while still being a good soon to be father.

Use your *blog as an experiment in parenting and get people talking to you as well as reading.
I think most successful blogs take on a life of their own as the owner, moderators, and community become active and integrated.

TLDR:
Do your blog about your interests and hobbies from the perspective of a soon to be parent.
Best of both worlds and a better chance of attention & money now rather than 10 years later. Plus I can think of a couple Tabbers who would be great contributors.
Catch those people in your generation making this same transition before they even realized they needed to be caught.
Good luck with everyting!
